titleOfInvention | Purification of triethylenediamine |
abstract | Crude triethylenediamine contaminated with piperazine and/or piperazine derivatives containing active H is purified by a process comprising contacting, preferably in an inert organic solvent, especially in an aromatic hydrocarbon's benzene, or a ketone, crude triethylene diamine with acrylonitrile in an amount at least chemically equivalent to the total active hydrogen content of the mixture under known conditions to effect cyanoethylation, preferably above 50 DEG C., and cooling the solution, preferably below 50 DEG C. to precipitate triethylene diamine. The crude product employed as feed stock may be obtained by contacting N-aminoethyl piperazine at elevated temperatures with a known cyclization catalyst and separation of the light ends by fractional distillation. The invention is described with reference to a plant flow sheet (not shown) showing also the piperazine conversion and including recycle streams. |
