titleOfInvention Improvements in the production of n-acetyl-l-cysteine
abstract N-acetyl-L-cysteine, is made by acetylating L-cystine in the presence of barium hydrate solution with ketene or acetic anhydride, to form N.N1 diacetyl-L-cysteine which is treated with sulphuric acid to remove barium as a precipitate of barium sulphate, and is then electrolytically reduced to N-acetyl-L-cysteine. Preferably a diaphragm cell is used with sulphuric acid as anolyte and the acid solution of the acetylated cysteine as catholyte. A carbon anode, and a cathode of tin, lead, mercury, or nickel which may be coated with platinum. Power at 12V, 5 Amps is applied, and the product solution is neutralised, concentrated and crystallized.ALSO:N: N1 - diacetyl-L-cystine is made by acetylating L-cystine in the presence of barium hydrate solution with ketene or acetic an-hydride.
