titleOfInvention Sulphonation of organic compounds
abstract Detergent compositions obtained by a cosulphation process (see Division C2) contain Na2SO4, Na xylenesulphonate, and (1) tetrapropylenebenzene and its Na sulphonate, (2) polyoxyethylated nonylphenol and its Na sulphate, or (3) polyoxyethylated lauryl alcohol and its Na sulphate. Products (2) and (3) are stated to be in paste form.ALSO:Organic compounds of different volatilities are co-sulphonated by introducing SO3 (diluted with an inert gas) and an excess of less volatile component into a reaction zone and, when this initial sulphonation is at least 25% completed, the more volatile component is introduced with additional diluted SO3 so that the total SO3 is within 5% of the stoichiometric amount for complete sulphonation of both components. In examples, the more volatile component is xylene and the less volatile component is (1) dodecylbenzene derived from tetrapropylene, (2) polyoxyethylated nonylphenol or (3) polyoxyethylated lauryl alcohol. In an illustrated embodiment, the organic compounds are passed as a free annular jet from high to low pressure zones to set up turbulence in the latter and the diluted SO3 is introduced into the centre of the annular jet.
