titleOfInvention Carbonyl polymers
abstract A copolymer of carbon monoxide with a carbonyl containing compound contains units of formula:- <FORM:1029734/C3/1> where R and R1 are the same or different and are hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, haloalkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy, aryl, substituted aryl, aralkyl, or heterocyclic and m, n and p are integers is prepared by subjecting the monomers to a pressure of at least 30 kg./cm.2 and a temperature in the range - 110 DEG to 250 DEG C. in the presence of a cationic catalyst which comprises a halogen derivative of an element of Group III, IV, V or VIII. The carbonyl containing compound may be formaldehyde or a polymer thereof, acetaldehyde, higher aldehydes, halogenated aliphatic aldehydes, acetone, dimethylketene, acetophenone, acrolein or crotonaldehyde. The copolymerization may take place by bulk or solution techniques.
