titleOfInvention Sealing means
abstract A sealing means comprises a base of flexible organic foam derived from vinyl polymers, cellulose acetate, linear polyurethanes or linear polyester-methanes, having interconnecting cells defining cell walls and an impermeable viscous liquid or semi-liquid coating interpenetrating and completely covering the cell walls of the foam base, the coating comprising a clear heavy permanently liquid or semi-liquid hydrocarbon which acts to secure adhesion of the coating to the cell walls and protect the foam base from ageing degeneration. A sealing means comprises a flexible elastic polyurethane foam having interconnecting cells defining cell walls, a fluid impervious coating covering cell walls of the foam base, and a coating comprising a liquid or semi-liquid polybutene e.g. polyisobutylene, to prevent oxidative degeneration of the foam and to act in conjuction with the base when the base is compressed to prevent passage of fluids through the interconnecting cells. The foam e.g. polyurethane foam, may have a density of 1 to 10 lb per cubic foot The polybutene may have a mean molecular weight of 300 to 27.000. The coating material may be formulated with drying oils to reduce tackiness of the polybutene. The coating composition may comprise a liquid or semi-liquid polyl butene material in an amount of 51 to 92% by weight of the total weight of the sealing means. The polybutene material may contain a colouring agent. The sealing means may be coloured. The polybutene material may comprise a hydrocarbonpolymer or copolymers of ethylemically unsaturated monomers e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene polyvinyl chloride, incorporated as soft solids or pellets compatible with polybutene and acting to enhance anti-slump and non-bleeding characteristics of the polybutene material. The coating may be applied by compressing, and then allowing slow expansion of the foam base in a bath of coating composition.
