titleOfInvention | A process for the preparation of a glycol ester |
abstract | Glycol esters are prepared by contacting an ethylenically unsaturated compound with a compound of a Group VIII precious metal, in a substantially anhydrous liquid medium at from 0 DEG to 150 DEG C. and a pressure of from 0.1 to 100 atmospheres, in the presence of an oxidizing acid in a proportion of at least 80 mol per cent of the metal compound. Oxidizing acids specified are sulphuric and arsenic acids, peracetic and perbenzoic acid, selenic and bromic acid and preferably nitric acid. The ethylenically unsaturated compounds may be ethylene, propylene, butene-1, isobutene, olefines by the cracking of paraffins, butene-2, cyclohexene, styrene, butadiene, or isoprene, and substituents such as halogen, alkoxy, hydroxy carbonyl or ester groups may be present, e.g. vinyl chloride, allyl chloride, allyl alcohol and mono- or dichlorobutenes, or mixtures of the above. Palladium is the preferred precious metal, and compounds of other metals, e.g. copper, iron, silver, zinc, cadmium, aluminium, scandium, yttrium, cerium, didymium (a mixture of lanthanum, neodymium, praseodumium and samarium), manganese, nickel and uranium, particularly a mixture of copper, iron and didymium may be present. The metals may be on carriers, and the medium may be of carboxylic acids or of aprotic solvents. Examples describe the preparation of ethylene glycol mono- and diacetates with acetaldehyde as a by-product. |
