titleOfInvention | Process and apparatus for sulphonation of organic compounds |
abstract | A process for sulphonating or sulphating organic compounds with SO3 comprises providing a liquid stream of the organic compound extending around the entire periphery of a reaction zone, flowing the stream laterally into the reaction zone around its entire periphery as a liquid layer 0.005 to 0.076 cm. thick, and at a velocity not in excess of 76 cm./sec., as admitted into the reaction zone, to form a smooth film of the liquid extending entirely around the periphery of the zone and descending in non-turbulent flow down the wall or walls thereof, flowing a gaseous mixture of SO3 and inert gas downwardly through the zone in contact with the film, maintaining contact until reaction is substantially complete, and cooling said film substantially throughout the said contact. Inert gas includes air, CO2, CO, SO2 and nitrogen. |
