titleOfInvention Petroleum fuel oil compositions
abstract A residual petroleum fuel oil composition consists of (1) a petroleum base oil having a viscosity of 5-250 c.s. at 100 DEG F., a specific gravity (60 DEG F./60 DEG F.) of 0.85-1 and containing a substantial proportion (e.g. at least 40%) of a distillation residue, and (ii) 0.005-1% by weight based on the composition of a naphthenate. A typical component (i) is a blend of 70 weight per cent of a distillation residue and 30 weight per cent of gas oil, but kerosine may also be present. Component (ii) may be manganese or copper naphthenate, and in an example copper naphthenate is used as solution in a chlorinated solvent, the solution containing 1.84 weight per cent of free naphthenic acids.
