titleOfInvention Stable aqueous suspensions of pesticides and herbicides and method of preparing the same
abstract A pesticidal or herbicidal composition comprises a mixture of the following in the presence of water: (a) a hydrophobic solid, which is a solid metal or a metalloid or sulphur or a solid organic substance; which does not react chemically with water, is insoluble in water and is not wetted by distilled water, in particles of sizes less than 50 m ; (b) a hydrophilic colloid soluble in water at ambient room temperature; (c) a surface-active agent which is a monoester or a polyester of a fatty acid and a polyol, liquid at ambient room temperature and giving an emulsion of the water-in-oil type; and (d) a liquid or liquefied hydrocarbon for aerosols containing at least 3 carbon atoms-said mixture yielding a stable suspension of said hydrophobic solid particles in an aqueous medium containing said hydrophilic colloid, surface-active agent and hydrocarbon, and wherein said hydrophobic solid either constitutes the active ingredient of said composition or a stabilizing adjuvant for the active ingredient which is then constituted by a hydrophilic solid in pulverulent state, or plays both parts. Specified components (a) are (i) active pesticides or herbicides: sulphur, hexachlorobenzene, ziram, T.M.T.D., dimethyl - dithiocarbamoylcarbinol benzoate rotenone, dimethyl carbamate of 5,51-dimethyl dihydroresorcine; 2,21-dihydroxy-5,51 -dichlorodiphenylmethane, thiocyano dinitrobenzene, hexachlorocyclo hexane, pyrethrins, D.D.T., Methoxychlor, para-dichlorobenzene, phenolthiazine, 1-naphthyl N-methyl carbamate, Dieldrin, Endrin, Aldrin, 2-chloro-4, 6-bis(ethyl-amino) - 1,3,5 - triazine and 2 - chloro - 4 - ethyl-amino-6-isopropylamino-1,3,5-trazine and (ii) inactive materials: aluminium, calcium stearate, magnesium stearate, zinc stearate, hexachloroethane and Rouge and Cyanine Lutecia powder, which are admixed with hydrophilic pesticides, e.g. copper oxychloride, zinc ethylene-bis-dithiocarbamate, maleic acid hydrazide and dinitro-orthocresol. Specified components (b) are: agar-agar, gum arabic, gum tragacanth, an alginate, a carragheenate, carboxy methyl cellulose, sodium cellulose glycollate and hydroxyethyl cellulose. Specified components (c) are: sorbitan, diethylene glycol, glycerol or polyethylene glycol oleates, laurates and ricinoleates. Specified components (d) are: saturated or unsaturated linear or branched aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbons or aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. pentene, cyclohexane, perosenes, petroleum ether, gasoline, vaseline oils, a -pinene, benzene and methyl naphthalene or in aerosols propane, butane or but-2-ene. The propellant for an aerosol may also be a chloro or chlorofluoro methane or ethane. Other ingredients are urea, acetone, perfumes and lavender oil.ALSO:A pesticidal or herbicidal composition comprises a mixture of the following in the presence of water:- (a) a hydrophobic solid, which is a solid metal or metalloid or sulphur or a solid organic substance; which does not react chemically with water, is insoluble in water and is not wetted by distilled water, in particles of sizes less than 50m (b) a hydrophilic colloid soluble in water at ambient room temperature (c) a surface-active agent which is a monoester or a polyester of a fatty acid and a polyol, liquid at ambient room temperature and giving an emulsion of the water-in-oil type and (d) a liquid of liquefied hydrocarbon containing at least 3 carbon atoms-said mixture yielding a stable suspension of said hydrophobic solid particles in an aqueous medium containing said hydrophilic colloid, surface active agent and hydrocarbon, and wherein said hydrophobic solid either constitutes the active ingredient of said composition or a stabilizing adjuvant for the active ingredient which is then constituted by a hydrophilic solid in pulverulent state, or plays both parts.
