titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to cellulose derivatives |
abstract | A cellulosic ion-exchange material is made by a process comprising the steps of (a) treating a cellulosic material with acid to remove the amorphous regions of the cellulose, (b) mercerizing the resulting acid-degraded product, (c) cross-linking the mercerized product and (d) reacting the cross-linked mercerized product with a reagent to form the desired cellulosic ion-exchange material. Cotton linkers is the preferred starting material. Preferably, step (a) is effected by treating the cellulosic material with an acid at a concentration up to 6 N at from 40 to 120 DEG C. (e.g. N.HCl may be used), step (b) by treating the acid-degraded product with an alkali solution of 17 to 46% w./w. concentration especially 18% caustic soda, and step (c) by treating the mercerized product with epichlorhydrin, optionally in water at a concentration of at least 3% by weight. The cross-linked product may be treated with an alkali solution of 3% to 46% w./w. concentration prior to step (d), which may be effected in an aqueous medium or in an organic medium, suitably isopropyl alcohol or benzene. The reagent used in step (d) may be 1,3-propanesultone, sodium chloracetate, or chloroethyl diethyl ammonium hydrochloride, used to prepare respectively sulphpropoxycellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose and diethylamino ethyl cellulose. Step (d) may be effected to an extent sufficient to provide a cellulosic ion-exchange material having an ion-exchange capacity of up to or greater than 2 m. eq./dry gram. There may also be introduced into the matrix of the cellulosic material non-ionic substituent groups capable of inducing selective interaction effects in a reversible exchange of ions in aqueous solution between the thus modified cellulose matrix and an exchanging ion. Specified non-ionic substituent groups include benzyl, methyl, acetate and stearate groups. Benzyl groups may be introduced by reacting benzyl chloride with the cellulosic ion-exchange material from step (d), or with the mercerized product from step (b). Other reactants which may be used include sodium benzyl chloride p-sulphamate, sodium benzyl chloride p-carboxylate or p-trimethyl ammonium benzylchloride chloride. Examples illustrate the production of sulphpropoxycellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, diethylaminoethyl cellulose, sulphpropoxybenzyl cellulose, carboxymethylbenzyl cellulose, diethylaminoethylbenzyl cellulose, quaternary ammonium benzyl cellulose, and quaternary ammonium cellulose. |
