abstract | The invention comprises pyra-olidinone derivatives of the formula <FORM:1025575/C2/1> wherein R1 is an aryl or alkyl-, alkoxy- or halogen-substituted group. The compounds are made by heating a hydrazine R1NH.NH2 with an alkyl substituted maleic or fumaric ester of the formula <FORM:1025575/C2/2> or with an ester of the formula <FORM:1025575/C2/3> wherein R2 and R3 are alkyl groups, in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide or alkoxide and then hydrolysing the product to liberate the free acid. The hydrolysis may be effected using a strong acid, e.g. HCl. The compounds are used as developing agents for photographic silver halide emulsion (see Division G2). Examples relate to compounds wherein R1 is a (1) phenyl, (2) p-chlorophenyl, (3) 3,4-dichlorophenyl and (4) p-methoxyphenyl group. |
