titleOfInvention Resinous compositions
abstract A composition comprising (1) an epoxy resin, (2) a phenolformaldehyde resin and (3) an interpolymer of from 60-98% by wt. of an alkyl methacrylate containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl portion and from 40-2% by wt. of another compound represented by the formula <FORM:1025565/C3/1> wherein R is hydrogen or a lower alkyl radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and Z is a <FORM:1025565/C3/2> or <FORM:1025565/C3/3> radical wherein R1 represents a radical derived by removing a hydroxyl group from a polyol or a radical derived by removing the halogen atom from a halogen substituted epoxide. The epoxy resin is preferably the reaction product of a diphenol, preferably para, para1-isopropylidene diphenol and an epihalohydrin. The phenol formaldehyde resin is preferably heat-reactive. Example A relates to the preparation of an epoxy ester resin which can be used as component (1). Examples G, H, J and K relate to polymerization of methyl methacrylate / acrylonitrile / glycidyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate/glycidyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate/glycerol/alpha allyl ether, and methyl methacrylate/hydroxyethyl vinylether respectively to form component (3). Example I relates to the preparation of a composition containing components (1), (2) and (3). The compositions containing components (1), (2) and (3) may be used as primer coating compositions, as such, or together with additives, e.g. chromium phosphate and titanium dioxide (see Examples II, VIII, VI and VII). Articles, e.g. metal sheets coated with the primer composition may also have a thermoplastic polymeric material super-imposed thereon. The thermoplastic material may be applied as a preformed sheet (see Example V) or as a plastisol (see Examples II, III, IV, V, VII, VIII). The plastisols are prepared according to Examples B, C, D, E and F and comprise either polyvinyl chloride or polymethyl methacrylate together with plasticizers and pigments.ALSO:Articles e.g. metal sheets, are coated with a composition comprising (1) and epoxy resin (2) a phenolformaldehyde resin and (3) an interpolymer of from 60-98% by wt. of an alkyl methacrylate containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl portion and from 40-2% by wt. of another compound represented by the formula <FORM:1025565/B1-B2/1> wherein R is hydrogen or a lower alkyl radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and Z is a <FORM:1025565/B1-B2/2> , or <FORM:1025565/B1-B2/3> radical wherein R1 represents a radical derived by removing a hydroxyl group from a polyol or a radical derived by removing the halogen atom from a halogen substituted epoxide. The epoxy resin is preferably the reaction product of a diphenol, preferably para, para'-isopropylidene diphenol and an epihalohydrin. The phenol formaldehyde resin is preferably heat-reactive. The compositions may be used as primer coating compositions; as such, or together with additives e.g. chromium phosphate and titanium oxide (see Examples II, VIII, VI and VII). A thermoplastic polymeric material may be superimposed thereon. The thermoplastic material may be applied as a plastisol (see Examples II, III, VI, V, VII, VIII). The plastisols are prepared according to Examples B.C.D.E and F and comprise either polyvinyl chloride or polymethyl methacrylate together with plasticizers and pigments. The coating may be applied by spreading e.g. by brush or rollers, spraying or dipping.
