abstract | Polymers containing carbonate and phosphonate linkages are made by condensing (a) an alkali metal diphenate, (b) phenyl phosphoric acid dichloride and (c) phosgene and/or a dichloroformate of a dihydric phenol; the diphenate being dissolved in water and the other reactants being dissolved in a water-immiscible organic liquid which is a solvent or swelling agent for the polymer. The reaction mixture may also include thiophosgene, terephthaloyl chloride, isophthaloyl chloride, phthaloyl chloride, sebacyl chloride, adipyl chloride or 4:41-diphenylether dicarboxylic acid chloride. Condensation is effected in the presence of a quaternary ammonium, phosphonium or arsonium compound or a ternary sulphonium compound. A large number of dihydric phenols are specified but the ones used in the examples are bisphenol A and a mixture of isomeric bis-(hydroxyphenyl)-methanes. Some of the polymers are soluble in chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon, toluene, xylene, tetrahydrofurane and dioxane. They are useful in the manufacture of films, threads and surface coatings. |
