abstract | A continuous chafer fabric is prepared by weaving a tubular fabric, wick-proofing the fabric, tackifying the wick-proofed fabric and bias cutting the tubular fabric at any stage subsequent to the weaving thereof. After wick-proofing and for tackifying, the fabric is dried in a tenter frame. Wick-proofing involves treating the fabric so that air cannot leak out of the interior of the tyre by 'wicking' along the yarns and polymeric material of the carcass. Specified wick-proofing baths contain a vinyl-pyridine/butadiene/styrene terpolymer, dispersions of latex and resorcinol formaldehyde solutions, dispersions or solutions of acid catalyzed regorcinal formaldehyde and butadiene vinyl-pyridene copolymer, solutions or dispersions of resorcinal formaldehyde with neoprene or with bromine containing iso-olefine-polyolefine interpolymer, or combinations of the above. Tackifying includes both calendering green rubber on to the fabric and dipping or padding with tackifying coating compositions. Specified tackifying baths are solutions or emulsions of pressure sensitive adhesives. Solutions of raw rubber, e.g. smoked sheet rubber dissolved in organic solvents such as benzol or naphtha, are specified. The bias cutting may be a single operation or a number of cutting operations taking place either simultaneously or at various stages of the process. The bias cutting angle is preferably between 40 degrees and 50 degrees, e.g. 45 degrees. The fabric which has been wick-proofed alone or both wick-proofed and dip coat tackified may be coated with rubber or other elastomers by passage of the treated fabric together with green rubber into a friction calender. The fabric may be made of rayon, nylon, polyester or cotton yarns. Continuous filament rayon or nylon yarns are specified. |
