titleOfInvention Halogen-containing phosphoric acid esters
abstract The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:1024641/C2/1> wherein the phenyl ring "a" is substituted with more than one halogen atom or is substituted with one or more halogen atoms together with one or more C1-C4 alkyl groups, and R1 and R2 are the same or different and each is an alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and a Cl or Br atom. They may be obtained (a) by reacting a phosphoryl halide of the formula (R1O)(R2O)P(O)Hal with an appropriately substituted phenol or alkali metal salt thereof optionally in the presence of an acid binding agent, e.g. triethylamine; (b) by reacting an appropriately substituted O-phenyl phosphoryl dihalide with an appropriate substituted alkanol or with an alkylene oxide and (c) by reacting a phosphite diester (R1O)(R2O)P(O)H with an appropriately substituted phenol or alkali metal salt thereof and an oxidizing polyhalogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon such as CCl4 in the presence of an acid binding agent, e.g. triethylamine. The products have nematocidal properties and may be used in conjunction with an acceptable carrier for the treatment of nematode infestations of the gastro-intestinal e.g. of sheep or cattle. The nematocidal formulation may contain a diluent and a dispersing or surface-active agent and may be presented in a draft or drench in water, in capsules or cachets in the dry state, in solution in a vegetable oil, in tablet form, in a suspension in water, in a water/oil emulsion in which case a preserving, thickening or emulsifying agent may be included or in the food of the host. The formulation is preferably in the form of a wettable powder.
