abstract | The melt-viscosity of polymers of lactams and/or the corresponding amino acids is increased by melting the polymer with an aryl ester of a polycarboxylic aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic acid or carbonic acid or a monomeric or polymeric mixed ester of carbonic acid with polyhydroxy aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or araliphatic alcohols and mono-and/or poly-hydroxy phenols. 0.1 to 1 weight per cent of ester may be used. In examples, polycaprolactam or a caprolactam/aminocaproic acid copolymer is treated with diphenyl carbonate, di-t-butylphenyl carbonate, diphenyl sebacate, hexane - 1,6 - diol bis - phenyl carbonate, 2,2 - dimethyl - propane - 1,3 - diol bis-phenyl carbonate or trimethylol-propane trisphenyl carbonate. Conventional additives may be added to the melt, e.g. stabilizers, pigments, dyes, fillers, fibres, plasticizers, metal powders, resins or mould release agents. |
