titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to stabilization
abstract Polyvinyl alcohol prepared by alkaline hydrolysis is stabilized by neutralizing the polyvinyl ester hydrolysate from which it is produced with an alcohol soluble aliphatic polycarboxylic acid and washing the neutralized resin with methanol or ethanol. Specified acids are aconitic, adipic, citraconic, glutaric, b -hydroxyglutaric acid, isosaccharic acid, itaconic acid, isocitric acid, methyl glutaric acid, succinic acid, tartronic acid and particularly citric acid, malic acid and tartaric acid. Specified polyvinyl ester starting materials are polymers and copolymers of vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, hexoate and benzoate and copolymers of such vinyl esters with vinyl stearate, vinyl halides, acrylic and methacrylic acids and esters, and olefins. Examples describe the neutralization of polyvinyl acetates hydrolysed with sodium hydroxide in methanol with (1 and 2) citric acid, (3) itaconic acid, (4) adipic acid, (5) malic acid, and (6) tartaric acid; and the neutralization of a vinyl acetate-dimethyl fumarate copolymer hydrolysed with sodium hydroxide in methanol with citric acid; the resins being subsequently washed with methanol.
