titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to polycarbonates
abstract A linear thermosetting polymer contains units derived from a bisphenol containing an unsaturated alicyclic group, and carbonate linkages, and optionally also residues of 1,4-butenedio or 4-cyclohexene-1,2-dimethanol or a hydroxy terminated polyester chain, derived from a diol and a dicarboxylic acid, having a molecular weight of 800-5000 and in which the diol or the diacid is olefinically unsaturated, or residues of maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic or ethylidenemalonic acids. The preparation of suitable bisphenols is described in Specifications 1,024,012, 1,024,013 and 1,024,014. They are condensation products from 2 moles of a phenol and 1 mole of an unsaturated alicyclic, aldehyde or ketone. Suitable components for the polyester chain are the above-named unsaturated diols and dicarboxylic acids. The polyesters are prepared by condensing the bisphenol with phosgene and optionally a bischloroformate of 1,4 - butendiol or 4 - cyclohexene - 1,2 - dimethanol or the unsaturated polyester, or with the unsaturated dicarboxylic acid chloride and phosgene and/or a diol bischloroformate. Coat ing compositions are prepared by dissolving the polyesters of the invention in a volatile solvent, e.g. methylene chloride, and adding a catalyst for the thermosetting reaction. 10-30 weight per cent of the polyester may be replaced by an unsaturated alkyd resin, e.g. one from a diol and maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic or ethylidenemalonic acid, or from linseed oil, dicyclopentadiene and e.g. diallyl phthalate or maleate or divinyl benzene. In examples, polyesters are prepared from phosgene and diphenylol (3 - cyclohexen - 1 - yl) methane, diphenylol-(6 - methyl - 3 - cyclohexen - 1 - yl) methane, diphenylol - (3 - methyl - 5 - norbornen - 2 - yl) methane and 6,6 - diphenylol - hexahydro-4,7-methano-indane, and from phosgene and the latter two bisphenols with fumaryl, itaconyl, or ethylidenemalonyl chloride, or cyclohexene - 4,5 - bischloroformate or the bischloroformate of a hexane diol/itaconic acid or butane diol/sebacic acid or a cyclohexane dimethanol/maleic acid polyester.
