titleOfInvention | Nitration of toluene |
abstract | Mixtures of isomeric mononitrotoluenes are prepared by nitrating toluene in the presence of at least one aromatic sulphonic acid. Known nitrating agents used are concentrated nitric acid, mixed nitric and sulphuric acids, nitrogen tetroxide and nitric acid in acetic and excess toluene may be used as a solvent for the nitrotoluenes produced. Specified sulphonic acids used are m-benzene disulphonic acid; 2,4-toluene disulphonic acid, benzene monosulphonic acid; p-nitrotoluenesulphonic acid, naphthalene 1,5-disulphonic acid, naphthalene 2,7-disulphonic acid; benzene 1,3,5-trisulphonic acid; ethylbenzene 2,4,6-trisulphonic acid, naphthalene 1,3,6-trisulphonic acid and naphthalene 2,4,5,7-tetrasulphonic acid. The use of the aromatic sulphonic acids increases the yield of p-nitrotoluenes. |
