Epoxy-alcohols are produced by heating on alkenyl hydroperoxide in the presence of a catalyst comprising at least one metal selected from Groups IVA, VA or VIA of the Periodic Table or a compound of said metal, with the exception of chromium and compounds containing chromium, whereby the hydroperoxide is decomposed to give a product containing epoxy-alcohols of the same carbon number as the feed hydroperoxide, and recovering said epoxy-alcohol from said decomposition product. The alkenyl hydroperoxides may be obtained by the vapour or liquid phase oxidation with oxygen of olefins. Examples are given, epoxides being formed as by-products of the decomposition reaction. |
