titleOfInvention Substituted 3-pyrazolidinones
abstract The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1022861/C2/1> where R is alkyl, aryl or aralkyl, R1 is alkyl of at least 2 carbon atoms, aryl or aralkyl, and R2 and R3 are alkyl, monocyclic aryl or aralkyl or both are hydrogen; and their preparation by heating an a ,a -R,R1-b -propiolactone with a solution of a hydrogen halide in an inert organic solvent to obtain an a ,a -R,R1-b -halopropionic acid converting this to the acid halide or ester, which is then refluxed with a hydrazine R2NH.NHR3 optionally in the presence of a proton acceptor in an anhydrous organic solvent; the products may be N-alkylated.
