titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to photographic materials, especially for imbibition printing
abstract The following polymeric materials are disclosed for use as mordants in photographic dye transfer materials (see Divisions G2-G3):- (a) Reaction products of an N,N-disubstituted alkylene diamine and a polymer containing mobile halogen or repeated 1,2-epoxy groups or of a haloalkylamine and a polymer containing tertiary amino groups. These have groups <FORM:1022206/C3/1> bound to some or all the monomeric units. (b) Reaction products of a compound of the formula <FORM:1022206/C3/2> and a halogen- or epoxy group-containing polymer as above. These have groups <FORM:1022206/C3/3> bound to some or all the monomeric units. (c) Reaction products of a halo-alkylamine and a polymeric heterocyclic amine. These have groups <FORM:1022206/C3/4> bound to some or all the monomeric units. (d) Reaction products of a monomer containing a quaternary or quarternizable nitrogen atom and a comonomer containing a primary amino group all of which have been rendered insoluble by a hardener which forms cross-links between primary amino groups. In the above formulae R and R1 are each alkyl, aryl or aryl-alkyl groups or together complete a 5 or 6 membered heterocyclic ring, R11 is a divalent aliphatic group, Y is H, alkyl or a condensed aromatic ring, Y11 is a divalent saturated aliphatic group, a single valency bond or a condensed aromatic ring, - - - Z - - - represents carbon atoms completing a 5 or 6 membered ring and X- is the anion of an inorganic or organic acid. The halogen-containing polymers may be obtained by treating polymers of styrene or phenol or naphthol-aldehyde resins with monochloromethyl ether in the presence of zinc chloride. Specified epoxy polymers are homo- and copolymers of allyl glycidyl ether; glycidyl acrylate, methacrylate and rotonate; and butadiene and vinylcyclohexene monoxides. Specified t-amino polymers for (a) are homo- and co-polymers of N,N-dialkylaminoalkyl-acrylates, -methacrylates, -acrylamides and -methacrylamides while specified polymeric t-amine for (c) are polymers of 2-methyl-5 vinylpyridine. Suitable N reactants for (a) and (b) are also specified. Cross links between the NH2 groups may be obtained by treatment with aldehydes, dialdehydes, polyaldehydes, di- and poly-epoxides, and dimethylolurea.
