titleOfInvention Diazaspiroalkanes
abstract Diazaspiroalkanes in which each ring contains 4-6 carbon atoms and one hydrocarbyl-substituted nitrogen atom which is adjacent the spiro carbon atom, and having CH2 in both rings adjacent the spiro carbon atom, e.g. those of formula <FORM:1021529/C3/1> where R is hydrocarbon, R1 is hydrogen or hydrocarbon, and n is 2-4 (see Division C2), are useful as difunctional catalytic epoxy curing agents.ALSO:The invention comprises diazaspiroalkanes wherein each ring is heterocyclic of 4-6 carbon atoms and one hydrocarbyl-substituted nitrogen atom, each nitrogen being attached directly to the spiro carbon atom, and each ring having CH2 adjacent the spiro carbon atom; e.g. those of formula <FORM:1021529/C2/1> where R is hydrocarbon, R1 is hydrogen or hydrocarbon, and n is 2-4, which are obtained by reacting at at least 50 DEG C. a compound of formula <FORM:1021529/C2/2> with aqueous non-oxidizing acid of a specified minimum concentration and strength. The starting materials are prepared by condensation of appropriate lactams. N-oxides of the compounds of the invention are referred to. When catalytically hydrogenolysed, the compounds of the invention undergo ring opening to give compounds of formula <FORM:1021529/C2/3> or <FORM:1021529/C2/4>
