titleOfInvention Detergent composition
abstract A built detergent composition comprises (A) from 80 to 10% of a mixture of 20 to 60% alkali metal (e.g. Na or K) straight-chain alkyl benzene sulphonate wherein the alkyl group has 10 to 15 carbon atoms and 80% to 40% of alkali metal (e.g. Na or K) straight-chain primary alkyl sulphate having 14 to 18 carbon atoms and (B) from 20 to 90% of water-soluble alkaline detergency building salt. In a particular embodiment the alkyl group chain length of the sulphonate is such that up to 5% of the groups contain less than 10 carbon atoms, 30% contain 10, 15-60% contain 10 or 11, 10-45% contain 13 or 14, up to 25% contain 14, 15% contain more than 14 and the balance 12, the sulphonate having 10-50% of the 2-phenyl isomer. The alkyl group of the alkali metal alkyl sulphate may be derived from tallow alcohols or petroleum. Up to 10% of branching in the alkyl chains is tolerable. The alkaline detergency building salt, whose weight ratio to detergent actives is in the range 0.7:1to9:1, may be one or more of alkali metal carbonates, phosphates, silicates, pyrophosphates, polyphosphates, ethylene diamine tetraacetates, nitrilotriacetates, N - (2 - hydroxyethyl) - ethylene diamine triacetates, N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-nitrilodiacetates, phytates and ethane-1-hydroxy-1,1-diphosphonate. Preferred builder compositions are mixtures of sodium tripolyphosphate and sodium nitrilotriacetate or sodium ethane-1-hydroxy - 1,1 - diphosphonate. The detergent composition may also contain 0.5-5% of an organic foam builder selected from C10- 16 alcohols, and normal amides, monethanolamides, diethanolamides, isopropanolamides and butanolamides of C10- 16 fatty acids. Other conventional additives may be present, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and benztriazole being mentioned in specific examples, and alkali metal silicates having a weight ratio of silica to alkali metal oxide of 1.0 to 2.6 when present act as corrosion inhibitors. The detergent compositions may be in granular form, e.g. spray dried, or compressed granular or tabletted form, or in the form of liquid dispersions.
