titleOfInvention Interpolymers
abstract An interpolymer is prepared by copolymerizing under anhydrous conditions in the presence of a catalyst a reactive form of formaldehyde and from 0.1 to 20 mol. per cent of the formaldehyde of an alpha mono-olefinic polymer, of formula CH2 = CHR or CH2 = X, where R is hydrogen, a C1- 30 alkyl, or a C6- 16 aromatic group and X is a carbon atom carrying two halogen atoms or one hydrogen and one halogen atom or a C1- 30 hydrocarbon substituted by a nitrile group, an ester fraction or one or more halogen atoms. Formaldehyde or trioxane may be used and a heterogenous catalyst or a Lewis acid or base, e.g. boron trifluoride may be used. Specified comonomers include ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, 1-hexane, 1-octene, styrene, substituted styrenes, acrylonitrile, butyl acrylate, methyl acrolein, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, methyl vinyl ketone, acrylic acid, vinyl halide, allyl halides and acrolein. Bulk or solution polymerization may be used.
