abstract | Titanium dioxide is made by the oxidation of titanium tetrachloride at an elevated temperature produced in a flame in the reaction zone, wherein at least some of the suspension of titanium dioxide in hot gas produced is withdrawn preferably by suction from the reaction zone through at least one cooled exit pipe which passes through the walls bounding the reaction zone and opens into the reaction zone at a point remote from said bounding walls at or beyond the further extremity of the flame. A preferred embodiment consists of an essentially cylindrical reactor with its longitudinal axis vertical, a single axial downward pointing flame and the withdrawal tubes for titanium dioxide being arranged radially and opening at or near the axis. Some of the tubes for withdrawing the titanium dioxide bearing gases may be used to introduce cold gases and may be arranged so that the suction force for removal of the product is obtained by Venturi action. Product not thus withdrawn may be collected from the bottom of the reactor. The invention is described with reference to three figures (not shown) which show a reactor arranged for suction, an alternative wherein gas injection is employed to provide the suction and a detail drawing of a Venturi action withdrawal tube. |
