titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to storable compositions which are polymerisable in the presence of air
abstract Methyl methacrylate monomer, triethylborane and a trace of iodine are formed into an aerosol spray composition with dichlorodifluoromethane and used as a coating spray.ALSO:A storable composition which is polymerizable in the presence of oxygen, comprises one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers or oligmers thereof polymerizable by a free-radical initiator, 0.1 to 10 mole per cent of a boron alkyl initiator of the general formula <FORM:1018991/C3/1> in which X represents Br, Cl, -OR7 <FORM:1018991/C3/2> or R8, and R5, R6, R7, and R8 represent monovalent hydrocarbon groups, and a polymerization inhibitor comprising an effective amount of Cl, Br, or I, or a precursor thereof. Specified monomers are vinyl chloride and fluoride, vinylidene chloride or fluoride, trifluoroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, chlorotrifluoroethylene, vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, allyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, butyl, hexyl, octyl, decyl, lauryl, and stearyl methacrylate, tetraethylene and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, acrylonitrile, fusel oil acrylate, and styrene. The boron initiator may be triethyl, tributyl, trihexyl, tridecyl, or tricyclohexyl borane, dibutylboron chloride, dibutyl boron bromide, (Bu)2, B-O-B(Bu)2, or (Bu)2B-O-Bu. A specified precursor is tetramethylammonium chlorodibromide. The compositions may also include inert diluents which may function as a propellant, e.g. dichlorodifluoromethane, pigments, dyes, plasticizers, and fillers such as fibrous magnesium silicate, and powdered aluminium metal. The compositions may be used as adhesives, coatings, sealants, or "potting" compositions. Exemplified monomers are methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, fusel oil acrylate, tetraethylene-glycol dimethyl acrylate, and a mixture of an unsaturated polyester in styrene. The polymerizable composition may be stored in a collapsible lead tube, or in a bottle with a conventional aerosol spray cap. A composition comprising powdered aluminium is used for filling dents in metal sheet material.ALSO:A storable composition which is polymerizable in the presence of oxygen, and which comprises one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers polymerizable by a free-radical initiator, 0,1-10% of a boron alkyl initiator, and a polymerization inhibitor comprising an effective amount of Cl, Br, or I, or a precursor thereof are used for, filling dents in metal sheet material, and coating pieces of wood, aluminium foil, paper, polyethylene film, and metal panels. In examples, a composition containing fusel oil acrylate, iodine, and tri-n-butyl borane is used for coating pieces of wood, aluminium foil, paper, and polyethylene film, a composition containing powdered aluminium, an unsaturated polyester in styrene, iodine, and triethylborane, for filling dents in sheet metal, and a composition containing iodine, methyl methacrylate, triethylborane, and dichlorodifluoromethane, enclosed in a bottle with a conventional aerosol spray cap used for spraying metal panels. Some of the coatings are pressure-sensitive.
