titleOfInvention Epoxide treated titanium dioxide pigment and use thereof in plastics
abstract TiO2 is treated with epoxides consisting of (a) one or more epoxidized esters of fatty acids having a chain length of from 1-18 C atoms esterified with alcohols having a chain length of from 1-10 C atoms; or (b) a product formed by condensation of difunctional materials, e.g. bisphenols, glycols or dibasic acids with epichlorohydrin. Examples of (a) are epoxidized castor oil, soya-bean oil, linseed oil, cotton seed oil, corn oil and tall oil and the alkyl (e.g. methyl, ethyl) and acetyl esters of the fatty acids of said oils. Examples of (b) are polyepoxides, glycidyl polyethers, and diepoxide polymers. The epoxidized esters may have oxirane oxygen numbers in the range of 2-9% by weight and iodine numbers from 1-45. A composition contains P.V.C. resin, di-octyl phthalate, a barium salt of a substituted phenol, cadmium 2-ethyl hexanoate, an organic phosphate, stearic acid, TiO2 treated with an epoxidized castor oil (riconileic glyceride), and carbon black. A second composition contains phthalocyanine blue in place of carbon black.ALSO:TiO2 pigment particles are coated with an epoxide consisting of either (a) one or more epoxidized esters of fatty acids having a chain length of from 1-18 carbon atoms esterified with alcohols having a chain length of from 1 to 10 carbon atoms; or (b) a product formed by condensation of difunctional material with epichlorohydrin, dried and milled. The TiO2 particles prior to coating is preferably rutile and may be prepared by any well known method, and may be treated with alkali metal salts, phosphate, hydrous oxides of aluminium, silica or titanium. The weight of epoxide is preferably 0.25%-1.0% of the dry coated pigment. Examples of (a) type epoxides are epoxidized glycerides or methyl, ethyl and acetyl esters of the acids of castor oil, soyabean oil, linseed oil, cotton seed oil, corn oil and tall oil the epoxidized oils themselves, and epoxidized iso-octyl ester of tall oil fatty acids. The difunctional materials of (b) may be bisphenols, glycols, and dibasic acids and product examples are glycidyl polyethers and diepoxide polymers.
