titleOfInvention | Novel polymers, process for their preparation and products prepared therefrom |
abstract | Polymers are obtained by reacting an anhydride or acid halide of an ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid having a chain of not more than six carbon atoms, with at least some of the phenolic hydroxy groups of a condensation product of a phenol and an aldehyde. The resulting ethylenic polymers may be cured by cross-linking, or may be copolymerized with ethylenically unsaturated monomeric material. The remaining phenolic hydroxy groups may be esterified or etherified with other materials. In examples phenolformaldehyde condensates are esterified with acrylyl chloride, methacrylyl chloride, crotonyl chloride and acrylic anhydride, and in some examples the remaining hydroxyl groups are esterified with the reaction product of two moles of phenol with one mole of phosphorus oxychloride and with chlorinated benzoyl chloride; some of the polymers are cross-linked or co-polymerized with styrene, triallyl cyanurate and methyl methacrylate in the presence of a benzoyl peroxide catalyst. Lists of other reactants are given. |
