titleOfInvention | Improvements in and relating to compositions resistant to electrostatic charge |
abstract | A macromolecular organic material is rendered resistant to electrostatic charge by incorporation of a minor amount, e.g. 0.1-7%, of at least one substituted keto acid amide, viz. <FORM:1018457/C3/1> where R1 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or arylalkyl radical, R2 is a C1- 5 alkylene radical or a direct bond between the two carbonyl groups, R3 is H or CH3 and R4 is a C2- 26 alkyl which may be substituted by a hydroxy or alkoxy group. The macromolecular material may be polystyrene, or a copolymer of styrene with butadiene, acrylonitrile or vinyl carbazole, polyvinyl chloride or a polymer of ethylene, propylene, butene-(1), pentene-(1), 4-methylpentene-(1), hexene-(1), 5,5-dimethyl-hexene-(1), octadecene - (1), 4 - phenyl - butene - (1) or vinyl cyclohexene, polyoxymethylene, polyacrylonitrile, poly (acrylic or methacrylic) acid exter, a polyterephthalate, a polycarbonate, a polyacetate, polyvinyl acetal, a polyamide, a polyurethane, or an unsaturated polyester or epoxy resin hardened by a basic reagent. The amide may be pyruvic acid N-methyl-N-(stearyl or dodecyl) amide, levulinic acid N-methyl-N-(stearyl or dodecyl) amide or levulinic acid N-ethan-2-ol-amide. The amides may be incorporated prior to or during polymerization or added to the polymer e.g. in granular form. The composition may be formed into shaped articles. |
