titleOfInvention | A method of making polyurethane films |
abstract | A method of making a sprayed polyurethane film comprises simultaneously spraying separate streams of a polyurethane prepolymer solution in a volatile organic solvent and an aromatic diamine solution in a volatile organic solvent into a common spray path and depositing the mixed spray as a film, the prepolymer having branched molecules in which the branches are isocyanate terminated, so that the prepolymer has a functionality greater than 2 with respect to the curative, and the film thereby cures rapidly at room temperature. In a modification the process comprises spraying separate streams of a solution of a linear polyurethane prepolymer having terminal isocyanate groups in a volatile organic solvent and of a mixture of an aromatic diamine and an aromatic triamine in a volatile organic solvent into a common spray path and depositing the mixed spray as a film. The diamine may be methylene diamine, a methylene diamine/metaphenylene diamine eutectic blend, 3,31-dimethyoxybenzidine or 3,31-dimethylbenzidine. The triamine may be 4,41,411-triamino triphenyl methane. The branched prepolymer may be formed by reacting one mole of a polymeric glycol of M.W. 300-5000 with from 1.5 to 2.5 moles of an aromatic diisocyanate and from 0.05 to 0.3 moles of a triol or organic triisocyanate. In examples (1) a prepolymer derived from a propylene glycol/ethylene glycol adipic acid polyester and toluene diisocyanate was heated at 230 DEG F. for 3 hours and dissolved in methylethyl ketone and mixed by spraying with a solution of methylene dianiline in methyl ethyl ketone from a two-head spray gun. In Examples (6) a linear prepolymer prepared as above but without heating was dissolved in methyl ethyl ketone and sprayed with 4,41,411-triamino-triphenylmethane in methyl ethyl ketone. |
