titleOfInvention Process for the production of 5-methyl-5-(3,4-dihydroxy-benzyl)-hydantoin
abstract In a process for the preparation of the title compound, a ketal or a mixture of ketals of the general formula <FORM:1016524/C2/1> in which one of R and R1 is a hydrogen atom and the other is an alkoxy - methyl radical R1111-OCH2, wherein R1111 is a lower alkyl radical and R11 and R111 are lower alkyl radicals or together represent an alkylene chain containing 2-4 C, is steam distilled at a pH of 2-3.5 until the distillate is formaldehyde-free, treating the resulting aqueous solution with ammonium carbonate and a water-soluble cyanide at a temperature of 15-45 DEG C. and adjusting to pH \sE7. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a reducing agent. A mixture of ethylene ketals of 4-hydroxy-3-methoxymethyloxy- and 3 - hydroxy - 4 - methoxymethyloxy-phenyl acetones is prepared from 3,4-methylene dioxyphenyl acetone-ethylene ketal.
