titleOfInvention Polymerization process
abstract A process for the continuous copolymerization of ethylene with at least one olefinic compound to produce a copolymer containing between 10 and 90 mole per cent ethylene, in a system in which the relative rates of polymerization of ethylene and the olefinic compound differ by a factor of at least 2, comprises continuously feeding to a reaction zone containing a rapidly agitated reaction mixture having turbulent randomly directed flow, a feed stream comprising the monomers and a catalyst, and continuously withdrawing at the same rate from the reaction zone a liquid product stream so as to maintain a constant volume of liquid in the reaction zone and to establish steady state conditions and a residence time of predetermined duration. The copolymerization is preferably effected both in the presence of hydrogen and in the presence of an organic liquid which is a solvent both for the monomers and for the copolymer produced. Many such solvents are specified of which hexane is exemplified. Comonomers exemplified are propylene, butene-1 and dicyclopentadiene; many others are specified including pentene-1, butadiene, isoprene and 2,3 dimethyl butadiene. The catalyst system, which must be soluble in hydrocarbons, comprises a transition metal compound and an organo-metallic reducing agent which are introduced into the reaction zone in separate feeds. Long lists of suitable catalyst components are given; those exemplified are vanadyl chloride; tri-n, sec- and tertbutyl vanadates, aluminium diethyl chloride and aluminium ethyl dichloride. The product stream is flowed into ethanol to precipitate the copolymer which is then refluxed with methanol. The copolymers produced are amorphous and rubber like, and are completely free from crystallinity as determined by X-ray measurements. The copolymers may be vulcanized with conventional vulcanizers and accelarators.
