titleOfInvention | Polymerization process |
abstract | Polymerization is carried out in a liquid medium present as a continuous phase to obtain a condensation polymer which is insoluble in the liquid medium, the reaction mixture including a precursor condensation polymer present as particles which are dispersed in the liquid medium, and within the body of which a condensation reaction takes place to form polymer molecules of higher molecular weight, the liquid medium containing a dispersing agent for the particles when the latter are liquid or a swelling agent for the particles when the latter are solid. The precursor polymer may be formed in the liquid medium and the condensation continued to form a polymer of higher molecular weight. Block or graft polymers may be obtained by the process if at least one of the reactants is a reactive condensation polymer. The liquid medium may be a hydrocarbon, halogenated hydrocarbon, ether, acetal, aldehyde, ketone, nitrile, tertiary amine, nitro compound or water. The dispersing or swelling agent includes ethers, ketones, heterocyclic compounds, certain polymers, and polyethylene glycols. In examples polymers are obtained from diethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol, dimethyl terephthalate and trimethylene glycol, terephthalic acid and tetramethylene glycol, dimethyl isophthalate and ethylene glycol, dimethyl terephthalate and 1,6-hexanediol, dimethyl terephthalate and neopentyl glycol, dimethyl terephthalate and hexamethylene glycol, dimethyl terephthalate and cyclohexane - 1,4 - dimethanol, dimethyl terephthalate and 4,41 - isopropyllidenediphenol, xylene glycol and tetrapropenyl succinic anhydride, dimethyl terephthalate, tetrapropenyl succinic anhydride and 1,6-hexanediol, 4,41-isopropylidene - diphenol and diphenyl carbonate, 4,41 - isopropylidene diphenyl and 1,6-hexanediamine and dimethyl adipate, hexamethylene diamine and dimethyl adipate, 1,4-bis-aminoethylcyclohexane, hexamethylene diamine and dimethyl adipate, ethylenediamine and sebacic acid, hexamethylene diamine and terephthalic acid, 1,6-hexanediamine and urea, hexamethylene diamine and di-n-propylcarbonate, 1,10 - decanediamine and urea, and 1,4 - butanediamine and urea; block polymers are obtained from poly (ethylene terephthalate) and poly(hexamethylene adipamide). |
