titleOfInvention Anhydrides of polyaryl ketones
abstract The invention comprises anhydrides of formula <FORM:1014664/C2/1> in which R and R1 are the same or different aryl radicals which contain an aromatic ring directly attached to the carbon atom of the >C=O group, each of the aryl radicals containing an anhydride group located at least two positions away from the carbon atom of the aromatic ring to which the >C=O group is attached, and the preparation thereof by oxidation of compounds of formula <FORM:1014664/C2/2> where R2 and R3 are the same or different and radicals which contain one or more aromatic rings at least one of which is directly attached to the carbon atom in the above formula, the aryl radicals containing, as nuclear substituents, at least two radicals defined by R4 which are adjacent and are located at least two positions away from the carbon atom of the aromatic ring to which the carbon atom in the above formula is attached, and R4 represents an alkyl group having from 1-16 C. The oxidation may be effected by chemicals or air. R and R1 (and therefore R2 and R3) may be phenyl, biphenylyl, naphthyl, phenanthryl, anthryl, indyl, dihydronaphthyl or cyclohexylphenyl groups. The remaining positions on the aryl radicals may be substituted. The preferred product is benzophenone - 3,4.31,41 - tetracarboxylic dianhydride.
