titleOfInvention Phenolic compounds and their production
abstract The invention comprises boron complex of a nuclear disubstituted ortho- (a -alkylol) phenol of the formula <FORM:1014655/C2/1> wherein either one or R1 and R2 is a halogen atom and the other is an alkyl group of 4 to 24 carbon atoms or an aryl group of 6 to 24 carbon atoms, or both of R1 and R2 are selected from alkyl groups of 2 to 22 carbon atoms and aryl groups of 6 to 22 carbon atoms, the sum of the carbon atoms in that case being 8 to 24, and R3 is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group of 1 to 7 carbon atoms or an aryl group of 6 to 10 carbon atoms. The boron complexes may be made by reacting a compound of formula <FORM:1014655/C2/2> with an aldehyde of formula R3CHO, in the presence of an alkali metal borate, at least one mole of aldehyde being employed for each mole of phenol, the reaction being preferably effected at 50-90 DEG C. The boron complex may be broken down by treatment with dilute mineral acid, and the nuclear 2,4-disubstituted ortho-(a -alkylol) phenol isolated.
