abstract | Acrylic and methacrylic acids are prepared by oxidizing acrolein or methacrolein in the liquid phase in an inert solvent with oxygen and in the presence of molybdenum and cobalt, or molybdenum and titanium, or molybdenum, cobalt and titanium in the form of oxides. The catalyst may include tellurium, vanadium or phosphorus oxides and be on a carrier such as "Carborundum" (Registered Trade Mark), silicagel, clay, pumice stone, aluminium phosphate or oxide and boron phosphate. Inhibitors against polymerization may also be present. Acetic and formic acids may be present as by-products. |
