titleOfInvention Hard metal deposits
abstract A process for the production of a metal carbide coating of extreme hardness containing W2C (i.e. having a hardness of not less than 1700 Vickers Pyramid Number using a 50 gm load) comprises pre-heating a surface to be coated, e.g. a steel surface, and directing upon the pre-heated surface a product formed by rapidly heating powdered W, in elemental form or combined with C, together with sufficient carbonaceous material where necessary to produce a deposit in which between 1.3% and 4.5% by weight of C is combined with the W, the heating being carried out under nonoxidizing conditions in a plasma torch at temperatures in excess of 2400 DEG C. Beta W2C is formed during the process which is unstable and tends to revert to the alpha modification be a solid, e.g. naphthalene or powdered C, a liquid, e.g. benzene, toluene CCl4 or lubricating oil, or a gas, e.g. propane, butane or acetylene. Substances which increase the rate of reaction between the W and C may be employed, such as CH3Cl and CCl4. The coating material may contain a binding material. The surface prior to being sprayed may be heated by the plasma torch using a transferred arc, the coating be deposited using a non-transferred arc, and the surface of the coating then be heated using a transferred arc.ALSO:A process for the production of a metal carbide coating containing beta W2C comprises directing upon a pre-heated surface a product formed by rapidly heating powdered W, in elemental form or combined with C, together with sufficient carbonaceous material where necessary to produce a deposit in which between 1.3% and 4.5% by weight of C is combined with the W, the heating being carried out under non-oxidizing conditions in a plasma torch at temperatures in excess of 2,400 DEG C. The beta W2C formed during the process is unstable and tends to revert to the alpha modification on cooling.
