titleOfInvention | Polymer latexes and coating compositions containing the same |
abstract | Polymer latices are made by emulsifying in water and polymerizing a mixture of monomers consisting of 5 to 20% of at least one ethylenic carboxylic acid and the balance of at least one vinylidene monomer copolymerizable therewith, the addition of the acid monomer to the emulsion being delayed until between 75 and 95% of the total monomers have polymerized. Acid monomers specified are acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic and maleic acids, and half esters of maleic and fumaric acids. Vinylidene monomers specified are mono- and di-olefines, esters, nitriles and amides of acrylic and methacrylic acids, vinyl and vinylidene halides, styrene and derivatives thereof, vinyl esters and diesters of maleic and fumaric acids. Also present in the reaction medium may be initiators, e.g. potassium persulphate and cumene hydroperoxide, modifiers, e.g. dodecyl mercaptan, and emulsifiers, e.g. sodium stearate, sodium lauryl sulphate, and an ethylene oxide/nonyl phenol condensate and the sodium salt of a sulphate ester thereof. The resulting latices, when adjusted to a pH of 8-10, are used as coating compositions, for which purpose these may be added thereto pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide, clay, magnesium silicate, iron oxide, barium sulphate and phthalocyanine blue, an alkali-soluble copolymers of styrene and maleic anhydride, maleic acid or a maleic half ester, and soya acids ester of a styrene-allyl alcohol copolymer. The latices may be rendered alkaline by the addition of ammonia, an amine, sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate. The examples describe the preparation of latices from (1) styrene, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, acrylonitrile and methacrylic acid, (5) butadiene, styrene and acrylic acid, (6) ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid, and (7) vinyl acetate and crotonic acid.ALSO:Surfaces of metal, wood, plastic, plaster and glass are coated by brush or roller with the product made by rendering alkaline a latex made by polymerizing in aqueous emulsion a mixture of 5-20% of an ethylenic carboxylic acid together with one or more vinylidene monomers, the addition of the acid monomer to the emulsion being delayed until between 75 and 95% of the total monomers have polymerized (see Division C3). Also present in the compositions may be pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide, clay, magnesium silicate, iron oxide, barium sulphate and phthalocyanine blue, an alkali-soluble copolymer of styrene and maleic anhydride, maleic acid or a maleic half ester, and a soya acids ester of a styrene-alkyl alcohol copolymer. The examples describe the preparation of coating compositions from the following monomer charges: (a) styrene, 2-ethylhexyl acrylonitrile and methacrylic acid, (b) butadiene, styrene and acrylic acid, (c) ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid, and (d) vinyl acetate and crotonic acid. In Example (9) a pigmented composition (d) is applied to glass and sealed wood surfaces. |
