titleOfInvention Polymerization reaction
abstract A reactive form of formaldehyde is polymerized with from 0.1 to 20 mol. per cent of the formaldehyde of a diene containing from 3 to 54 carbon atoms in the presence of a polymerization catalyst. A Lewis acid may be the catalyst when trioxane is polymerized and a Lewis base when formaldehyde, although heterogeneous catalysts may also be used. Long lists of suitable catalysts may be given. Specified dienes are 1.2 and 1.3-butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene, bromoprene, 2.3-dimethylbutadiene, squalene, allene, 4-vinyl-cyclohexene - 1, 2 - 5 - hexadiene, 1 - 4 - heptadiene, 1 - 6 - octadiene, 1 - 3, 1 - 4, and 1 - 5-cyclooctadiene, diallyl, 1 - 3 - pentadiene, 2-vinylcyclooctadecene - 4, cumulenes and 4-vinylcyclohexadiene-1-5. The polymerization may take place in bulk, as vapour, in solution or emulsion, as a continuous process, a batch process or a semi-batch process. The interpolymers may be end-capped, e.g. by treatment with an anhydride such as acetic anhydride or a dialkyl acetal to esterify the groups.
