titleOfInvention | Preparation of azodiformate diesters and novel secondary aliphatic diesters |
abstract | Blowing agents for polymeric materials, e.g. polypropylene, comprise di-(sec. alkyl or sec. chloroalkyl) azodiformates of general formula <FORM:1012264/C3/1> where R1, R2, R3 and R4 are alkyl or haloalkyl groups of 1 to 7 carbon atoms (see Division C2) and specified compounds are diisopropyl di-(sec. butyl) and di-(sec. octyl) azoformates.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of general formula <FORM:1012264/C2/1> where R1, R2, R3 and R4 are alkyl or halo-alkyl groups of 1-7 carbon atoms, specifically diisopropylazodiformate di-(sec. butyl) azodiformate, and di-(sec. octyl) azodiformate and a process of preparation thereof by reacting a haloformate ester, hydrazine and a soluble alkaline compound in water as reaction medium to produce a hydrazo diester product and oxidizing to convert to azodiformate diester. Aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic halo-formates may be used preferably methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, sec. butyl and sec. octyl chloroformates, and the liquid medium may include ethanol, isopropyl ether, methylene chlorides, benzene and cyclohexane. An acidic oxidizing agent such as chlorine, bromine or nitric acid is preferred. Examples describe the preparation of diisopropyl, dimethyl, diethyl, and di-(secondary butyl and octyl) azodi-formates. The compounds are suitable for use as blowing agents. |
