abstract The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1008173/C2/1> wherein R is an alkyl group having not more than 5 carbon atoms and each of R1 and R11 is an alkyl group having not more than 5 carbon atoms or R1 and R11 together complete a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring and A is an alkylene group having not more than 5 carbon atoms and the acid addition and quaternary salts thereof. Suitable values of R1 and R11, where R1 and R11 complete a heterocyclic ring, are pyrrolidino, piperidino, piperazino, N-alkylpiperazino, morpholino or thiomorpholino. The compounds are prepared by heating a compound of the formula <FORM:1008173/C2/2> wherein X is a halogen atom, with an amine of the formula NHR1R11 in the presence of an inert solvent or, when the amine is a liquid, excess of the amine and optionally in the presence of an acid eliminating agent. Examples describe the preparation of 3-piperidinomethyl-, 3-morpholinomethyl-, 3-diethylaminomethyl-, 3 - (b - piperidinoethyl)-, 3 - (b - morpholinoethyl)-, 3 - (b - pyrrolidinoethyl)- and 3 - (b -diethylaminoethyl)-5-methyl-isoxazole.
