titleOfInvention Process for polymerising ethylenically unsaturated compounds
abstract Monomers having the general formula <FORM:1007717/C3/1> in which R1, R2, R3 and R4 are the same or different and are hydrogen, saturated or non-saturated hydrocarbon radical, halogen, nitrile group, carboxylic acid, carboxy ester or other acyl containing group or halogen-substituted hydrocarbon radical, are polymerized using a complex boron compound as catalyst, the complex comprising a co-ordination linkage between as a first component (a) a boron trialkyl and as a second component (b) a compound containing an element of Group V or VI of the Mendel<\>aeeff Periodic Table which is capable of donating electrons to the boron atom to provide the co-ordination complex compound, but excluding nitrogen containing compounds other than heterocyclic compounds containing a tertiary nitrogen atom. The catalyst complex may be activated by the presence of a compound containing an element having an electron donating character and a mobile hydrogen atom, e.g. water, an alcohol, a thioalcohol, phosphine, stibine, arsine, hydrogen sulphide or hydrogen selenide may be used. The polymerization can be carried out in bulk or in a polar or inert solvent. In the examples: (1) vinly chloride is polymerized using (a) boron triethyl complexed with pyridine, diethyl ether or tetrahydrofuran optionally in the presence of water, and (b) boron triisobutyl complexed with diethyl ether; (2) acrylonitrile, methylmethacrylate, styrene and vinyl acetate are separately polymerized using boron triethyl complexed with pyridine, optionally in the presence of water.
