titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to sulfonated fluorene compounds
abstract Monosulphonic- and disulphonic acids of 9,9-di-(carboxyalkyl)-fluorenes, of the general formula <FORM:1006578/C2/1> (wherein Y is a -SO3H group, X is a hydrogen atom or a -SO3H group, R is a hydrogen atom or a C1 to C10 alkyl group, and n is an integer having a value from 1 to 10, are produced by reacting the appropriate di-(carboxyalkyl)fluorene with concentrated sulphuric acid. Monosulphonation predominates at temperatures from 0 DEG C. up to 65 DEG C. The disulphonation reaction is preferably carried out from 90 DEG to 130 DEG C. A sulphonation catalyst, such as mercury, mercuric sulphate or vanadium pentoxide, is used. The sulphonated products may be converted into alkali metal salts, or ammonium or quaternary ammonium salts. The following compounds are claimed per se: 9,9 - di - (21 - carboxyethyl) - and 9,9 - di-(21 - carbomethoxyethyl) - fluorene - 2 - sulphonic acids, the bis-(2-methylpentyl)ester of potassium 9,9 - di - (21 - carboxyethyl) - fluorene - 2 - sulphonate, 9,91 - di - (21 - carboxyethyl)-and (21-carbomethoxyethyl)-fluorene-2,7-disulphonic acids, and the sodium and di-sodium salts of 9-(21-carbomethoxyethyl)-9-(51 - carbomethoxypentyl) - fluoren - 2 - sulphonic acid and -2,7-disulphonic acid, respectively. The invention also includes compounds formed by the reaction of the sulphonated products with the beryllium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, strontium, barium and tin salts of monocarboxylic acids. These compounds contain the group -SO3MZ, wherein M is one of the metals specified above and Z is a carboxylate group. 2-Acetoxybariumsulpho-9,9 - di - (21 - carboxyethyl) - fluorene and 2,7 - di - (acetoxystannoussulpho) - 9,9 - di-(21 - carbomethoxyethyl) - fluorene are claimed per se. Specification 1,006,579 is referred to.
