abstract The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1006337/C2/1> wherein R, R1 and R11 each represent an alkyl group of not more than 5 carbon atoms, X represents a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl group and a double bond exists between the 6-position and an adjacent position thereto, and a process for the preparation thereof in which a 6-hydroxy morphinan of the formula <FORM:1006337/C2/2> wherein X1 represents a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl or acyloxy group is reacted with a metallic alkylating agent in which the alkyl moiety has not more than five carbon atoms in an inert solvent medium to give a product which is treated with water and the thus produced compound of the formula <FORM:1006337/C2/3> is treated with a conventional dehydrating agent in an organic base medium. The metal alkylating agent is suitably a metal alkyl or an alkyl metal halide which may be used at from room temperature to reflux temperature. The dehydration is preferably carried out at not higher than 15 DEG to 30 DEG C. The morphinous of the formula I may be obtained in the form of their acid addition salts. (-) - 3 - Methoxy - 6 - oxo - 14 - hydroxy-N - methylmorphinan - (cis) is prepared by a process in which thebaine is oxidized to give the corresponding 6-oxo-14-hydroxy derivative, the oxime of which is hydrogenated to give a 3 - methoxy - 4 : 14 - hydroxy - 6 - oxo - N - methylmorphinan which is converted to its 4-phenyl ether and the latter to its ketal with ethylene glycol. The 4-phenoxy-group is eliminated and the product deketalated to give the required morphinan. (-) - 3 - Methoxy - 6 - oxo - acetyloxy - N - methylmorphinan-(cis) is prepared by acetylating the corrdsponding 14-hydroxymorphinan.
