titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to electrophotographic materials
abstract The light sensitivity of zinc oxide powder which is to be incorporated in electro-photographic material is reduced by treating the powder surface with a salt of aluminium, bismuth, chromium, copper, iron, lithium, magnesium, nickel, tin, or titanium so that the metal salt combines with at least 10% of the surface of the oxide particles. Metal salts exemplified are the chlorides of nickel, magnesium, lithium, chromium, aluminium, ferric iron, and cuprous and cupric copper, the iodides of bismuth and stannous and stannic tin, and tetra-iso-propyl titanate. The zinc oxide powder is treated with the metal salt in the manner described in Specification 1,005,245 and is similarly incorporated in electro-photographic material. Reduction of the light efficiency of the zinc oxide by the treatment of the present invention reduces the sensitivity to blue and ultra-violet light but if the modifying metal salt is also by virtue of its acid portion, a Lewis acid, the oxide becomes capable of absorbing any desired dyestuff sensitizer so that, for example, the overall sensitivity of the oxide to white light may be increased. Crystal violet is the dye used in the example given. Specification 1,005,247 also is referred to.
