titleOfInvention Detergent tablet
abstract Detergent tablets which rapidly disintegrate in cool water comprise, by weight (a) 5-50% of a C8- 20-, preferably a C8- 15-, alkyl benzene sulphonate and/or a C8- 20-alkyl sulphate, (b) 0-20%, preferably 8-14%, of a C10- 20-soap; (c) 30-70% granular sodium tripolyphosphate; and (d) 0.5-40%, preferably 0.5-25%, water; the total of (a) and (b) being 15-50%, (a) and (b) comprising at least 50% each of surface-active material, the balance being inert inorganic salt such as sodium, potassium or ammonium sulphate, (a) and (b) both being in flake form and having as cation sodium, potassium or ammonium, and the weight ratio (c) to (a) being 3 : 4 to 5 : 2. In addition, the tablets preferably also contain (e) up to 15% of a water-soluble silicate, e.g. anhydrous sodium metasilicate; (f) up to 15% of a water-soluble perborate, e.g. sodium perborate; (g) up to 5% of a suds builder, e.g. an amide or ethanolamide of a C8- 20-fatty acid; (h) up to 3% of a soil-suspending agent, e.g. carboxymethylcellulose; and (i) up to 25% of one or more inert inorganic salts in addition to any present in (a) and (b), e.g. sodium or potassium phosphates, borates, carbonates, sulphates or chlorides. Persulphates, e.g. KHSO4.K2SO4.2KHSO5, non-ionic and cationic detergents, optical brighteners, perfume and dye may also be incorporated. Prior to tabletting, the mixture should be such that not more than 20% by weight of the particles are of a size less than 0.2 mm., and at least a portion of the sodium tripolyphosphate is in an anhydrous low density form. The mixture may then be moistened with up to 5% water, or with a solution of dextrin glue or a silicate to agglomerate the tripolyphosphate and is then tabletted by compression at 400-600 p.s.i. between dies which rotate with respect to each other through about 5-180 degrees. The tablet so obtained comprises 40-60% by volume of voids and is then preferably water-cured by moistening the surface with 0.5-5% water by weight of the tablet or by exposure to steam, and is then dried in air or by continuous passage through an oven
