titleOfInvention | A graduating apparatus of optical interference type |
abstract | 1,004,002. Photo-electrically controlled dividing engines. AGENCY OF INDUSTRIAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, MINISTRY OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE & INDUSTRY. Sept. 19, 1961 [Sept.20, 1960], No. 33450/61. Headings G1A and G1X. A dividing engine in which graduations are marked withthe aid of an interferometer is provided with a further interferometer which maintains its own path length substantially constant. The scale blank to be divided, 28, is mounted on a carriage 29 which also carries a corner reflector 9 and is moved by driving means 34. Light from a krypton 86 light source is collimated and monochromated before being split by a device 6 to prodice two beams incident respectively on the reflector 9 and a similar fixed reflector 10. The reflected beams interfere on recombination at device 6, and the fringes produced are counted by a photo-cell 14 and counter 33. When a predetermined number of fringes have been counted, driving means 34 is stopped and the graduating mechanism 27 actuated. The further interferometer 19 comprises half silvered plates inclined at a very slight angle and separated by the same material as constitutes the scale blank 28. Light from a mercury lamp 15 forms fringes by multiple reflections in 19. A mercury light source is used and the distance between the plates is chosen so that all the principal mercury lines in the range of sensitivity of the Sb-Cs photo-cells 23 and 24 produce coincidental fringe at the centre of prism 22. Any difference in output between the cells 23 and 24 controls a pressurizer 32 to keep the fringe centred on the prism 22. |
