titleOfInvention | A method of controlling plasma stability |
abstract | 1,003,900. Thermonuclear apparatus. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. April 16, 1964 [July 12, 1963], No. 15798/64. Drawings to Specification. Heading G6P. In a thermonuclear fusion device a high temperature gas plasma is confined between magnetic mirrors and is stabilized by the injection, into the magnetic confinement zone, of plasma particles of a type different from those forming the plasma. The added particles may be injected perpendicularly or tangentially into the plasma so as to stabilize specific regions of the fusion zone. In the embodiment described, in which hydrogen was employed as the thermonuclear fuel, tritium was injected into the plasma along a path perpendicular to the plasma axis. The stabilizing action of the arrangement is caused by the adjustment of the mean or effective particle orbit radius produced by the added plasma components. The orbit radius is shown to vary as a function of the density, mass number, charge and temperature of the plasma constituent particles. Specification 931,076 and U.S.A. Specification 3,152,959 are referred to. |
