Sliver from a machine 1 is transferred to a second machine 3 through a circulatory system of sliver cans which move in a polygonal path. Between can K which is being filled and can K10 there is a vacant space 4 for two cans. When can K1 is filled cans K1 and K2 rapidly move forward one can diameter so that can K1 contacts side rollers 5-made for example of rubber. The rollers then swiftly move can K1 forward another can diameter to straighten the sliver between can K1 and the first drafting frame 1 and to provide room for the insertion of a sliver nipping device adjacent can K2. As can K2 is being filled the other cans are slowly moved round the polygon one position. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown) the polygon is a rectangle having a vacant space 4<SP>1</SP> with room for one can.
